While these new machines are fast and efficient, they are definitely “bleeding edge” and there are significant growing pains right now. This ended up throwing my machine into a boot loop and I spent hours in recovery mode before finding an article with a solution of downloading Apple Configurator 2 on my mbp, booting the Mac mini into DFU, and doing a hard restore of the firmware and OS. After getting it set up initially I figured I’d update to macOS 11.0.1. I would caution you with this though: setting up the Mac mini was an absolute nightmare. In fact, I have yet to hear the fan even turn on at all. Even with just 8GB of RAM I can have two simulators open running medium-complexity apps with no issue. Xcode is optimized for Apple silicon and the app itself runs very smoothly. But I think this is just par for the course anymore for Xcode unfortunately. That way, you get to use regular SQL (or an ORM of your choice) right from the start, and you can relatively painlessly migrate to a 'bigger' SQL db if you later need it. I’ve still noticed issues with syntax highlighting sometimes being really slow on some of my more complicated code. For starters, you should check out SQLite, it's a SQL db that is made for embedding. SQLite's code is in the public domain, which makes it free for commercial or private use. I've also included a few personal database tools as well. It was much quicker, if I had to put a number on it I’d say twice as fast. Here's an overview of some of the best free and open source database software tools for Macs. Install the OS, run the Xcode installer, and voil Instant. Honestly the biggest difference I noticed was when Xcode was installing. With Mac OS X, I have the tools to write everything from device drivers to large database-driven applications, for free with the OS. However, subsequent builds are about as quick. The initial build times are a lot faster than on my base model 16” mbp. I have an M1 Mac mini w/ 8GB RAM running the public release of Xcode 12.2.
